Our Approach
It is clear that with a more systematic and scientific approach, Artisanal and Small Scale Mining can become economically, socially and environmentally sustainable. Our focus is the approximately 12 000 Artisanal and Small Scale Gold Mines in Zambia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Mozambique, Ghana, Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, Nigeria and Zimbabwe. In each of these regions one or more support centres are being established. The approach, from a Responsible Private Sector perspective is to Support, showcase and develop Small Scale Artisanal mines with a structured package comprising of Technology, Access to Equipment, Access to Human Resources and Capital.

We have utilised our regional relationships to identify Artisanal and Small Scale Gold Mining activity in financially and socially underserved areas across Africa. In most of these instances the necessary skills and equipment are available locally and is not seen as a constraint neither are there unsurmountable legal obstacles (in many instances there are none). Through these relationships we are establishing support centres near clusters of Artisanal and Small Scale Miners.
Small Scale Mines that form part of this Exchange Trust initiative will benefit from:
-
Access to resources (equipment, infrastructure) to improve mining conditions (health, safety, environment) and mining efficiency
-
A pricing strategy that is linked to global market pricing and not cannibalistic pricing approaches that will otherwise not achieve sustainability or economic viability
-
Support centres will provide skilled resources such as Geologists, Mine Engineers, Quality assessors and Business Coaches to enhance the value development of the small scale mine
-
Achieving linked social economic activity within the community including education, health care, retail business activity
-
Achieving an environmentally sensitive mining approach and model to support sustainability
